There are also some behavioral tips that can help prevent hemorrhoids. While on the toilet, you should avoid straining to pass stools. Relax and let everything happen naturally. Also, avoid holding your breath while using the restroom or while lifting heavy objects. This can cause unnecessary strain that can cause hemorrhoids to develop. Lastly, you should avoid sitting on the toilet for extended periods of time. Avoid reading or using a smartphone while on the toilet, and get up as soon as you are done (Source: WebMD).
